And how you can be a part of it.

About Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program where neighbors, "Look out for each other!" It's a crime prevention program that encourages neighborhood participants to get to know each other and their routines so that any out of place activity can be observed, recognized as what it is, reported and investigated.

  • Citizens being aware of, and knowing how to recognize and report, suspicious activities in their neighborhood;

  • Implementation of crime prevention techniques, such as Home Security, Operation Identification and others.

  • An essential part of a neighborhood watch program is maintaining a relationship with the local police department. If you are starting a new group they can help you get going.

  • WE ARE NOT A POLICE FORCE!  We report to the police what we see. We are not sworn officers and we do not confront persons if there appears to be a crime in progress.

How it Works

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office work with local communities in a number of ways. The crime prevention officer will be the liaison to the public. He/She will be your conduits for relaying community issues and concerns to the police in the area and provide neighborhood watch tips.

If a member of the crime watch observes suspicious persons or activity they can alert local law enforcement. Ask for their help in organizing local community events, self-defense classes and other helpful seminars.

Neighborhood Block Capitan

Neighborhood Block Captains are pivotal leaders in a Neighborhood Watch program, acting as liaisons between residents and law enforcement. They organize residents on their block, facilitate meetings, and disseminate information about crime trends and safety tips.

Block Captains maintain a communication system for sharing alerts and updates quickly. They encourage residents to observe and report suspicious activities, educate them on crime recognition and reporting procedures, and coordinate neighborhood patrols or watch activities if applicable.

Additionally, they inform their street of home owners of any important security events, encourage participation in training on safety and emergency preparedness, act as the street's liaison with JSO, and keep records of meetings and incidents. Regular meetings with law enforcement keep them informed about local crime issues and prevention strategies, which they relay to residents. Block Captains are essential for the effective operation of Neighborhood Watch programs, ensuring a safer and more connected community.

Relationship with JSO

Every 1st Thursday of the Month, there is an open Neighborhood Watch Program Meeting. We are in Zone 4 - Sector J. These meetings are held at the Lane Wiley Senior Center at 7pm, unless otherwise notified.

Here they provide valuable information and useful tips to share with the neighborhood crime watch leaders of Blue Lake Estates, as well as the community as a whole. This can have information on both our area and the local police department aimed at educating and informing people of what is happening in the community.

We also strive to get a police officer to attend our annual HOA meetings, to answer questions and inform our community; while also creating a more constructive relationship with the JSO police department, thus increasing the effectiveness of our efforts.
